  • Will WOOLBABA fit in my stroller?
WOOLBABA is designed with universality in mind. It has been tested and measured against a range of strollers including the latest Thule that has a unique body-harness that encapsulates Baba. WOOLBABA has pre-cut harness holes catering for both 3-point and 5-point harness systems allowing WOOLBABA to grow with your Baba. 3-Point Harness System There are a few brands that uses one continuous harness strap from shoulder to hip. Simply untether this strap (either in front or at the back of your stroller, based on the specific brand), pop WOOLBABA in, and re-tethered the strap! Please refer to your pram's assembly guide to see how to untether the strap. 5-Point Harness System Simply run straps through WOOLBABA's pre-cut holes! REMEMBER! We're here to help! Please send us a DM on Instagram, email at hello@woolbaba.co.za or fill in the contact form below to let us know if you get stuck!

In accordance with safety regulations, we do not recommend WOOLBABA be used in car seats. Please refer to our full instructions on how to fit your WOOLBABA below!
  • Can I use WOOLBABA year-round?

  • Is WOOLBABA safe for Baba?
Yes. WOOLBABA sheepskins are responsibly tanned to minimise the impact on the environment, whilst balancing durability and safety for Baba. Its' tanning method includes the lowest amount of chromium possible in order to provide WOOLBABA with its' excellent durability, stain-resistance, density and moisture resistance to ensure WOOLBABA lasts for many years. Less than 1% of non-toxic hexavalent variety chromium remains on the back of the sheepskin hide after treatment. The sheepskin fur itself is untouched and therefore safe for human, baby and animal exposure.
  • Is WOOLBABA suitable from birth?
Yes! Suitable for use in your moses basket, bassinet & baby bouncer from day one, sheepskin has some amazing health benefits for newborns. Naturally thermostatic, sheepskin helps to regulate a baby’s body temperature (something that babies under 18 months struggle to do themselves) helping to keep your baby toasty in winter & cool come summer.
  • Can WOOLBABA be used for sleeping?
Yes! WOOLBABA has specifically been shorn to a shorter length to provide optimal density for Baba. For sleep in the bassinet or cosleeper, it is recommended as per SIDS guidelines to pop your WOOLBABA under your mattress fitted sheet. Whilst we can’t make the choice for parents, we can make sure all the information is available. We follow the Lullaby Trust advice on safe sleep. A recently published report on sleeping on ‘soft surfaces’ refers to sheepskin specifically. It explains that when babies are placed on their back (in the supine position), sheepskin has no impact on the risk of SIDS. However, the Lullaby Trust does not recommend young babies sleeping on any soft surface, including sheepskin, unattended in the prone position. Some parents choose to wait until their baby is old enough to easily roll over unassisted before using sheepskin to sleep on. This is typically from the age of 6 months old and coincides with a reduction in SIDS. Almost 90% of cases of SIDS occur in infants under 6 months of age. What Type of Sheepskin is Safe for my Baby? If you are laying your baby on sheepskin, then we always recommend shorn sheepskins for younger babies since its dense pile provides optimum support. Our sheepskins are shorn to 30mm which is the optimum level for comfort and weight distribution. Sheepskin is naturally breathable so whilst it is warm in winter it is also cool in summer and the perfect natural fibre all year round. The naturally occurring lanolin in sheepskin is moisturising for skin and the fibres are gentle and soft enough to provide a soothing environment for a contended baby. Not only is sheepskin a gorgeous natural product, but it is also sustainable and will last many years.
  • What is WOOLBABA's manufacturing process?
WOOLBABA is treated with the absolute minimum required percentage non-toxic hexavalent variety chrome on the hind-side of WOOLBABA only to reap all it's benefits: durability, stain-resistance, water-resistance, density and softness. Less than 1% of the tanning treatment remains on the back of the sheepskin hide after processing. The sheepskin fur itself is untouched by tanning and therefore safe for human, baby and animal exposure. WOOLBABA is cut from one single fleece so you’ll find no seams here – we really are a cut above the rest, not fast fashion, just timeless nature. Before WOOLBABA is sent to you, it is meticulously brushed and sprayed with Absorbine (est. 1892, globally available and trusted) to nourish and further soften its' fibres and add a delicate and non-toxic scent. Finally, WOOLBABA is branded with OEKO-TEX certified stamps and popped into OEKO-TEX certified 100% cotton draw string bags: beautiful, gift ready, longlasting, and environmentally sensitive.
  • Always use WOOLBABA supervised
Your Baba's safety trumps all. Only use WOOLBABA when you are present and watching.
  • Is there anything to be aware of when using a 100% natural product with my baby?
Sheepskin & wool are incredibly resilient, hardwearing, naturally antibacterial & dirt resistant thanks to the lanolin found in wool. Natural products such as sheepskin & wool can change in colour when exposed to sunlight & this is part of the natural nature of our products & is to be expected over time. Some minor shedding can occur on our sheepskin liners where our pre-cut harness holes are cut into the sheepskin. Before use, we recommend running your fingers along the edge of the harness holes & giving a gentle shake to release any loose fibres.
  • Back is best!
Always place Baba on their back in the supine position whilst using WOOLBABA in accordance with safe baby sleep practices and SIDS guidelines. You can read more here.
  • From where is WOOLBABA sheepskin sourced?
Our sheepskin is carefully sourced from free roaming flock in Zululand that would otherwise be wastefully destroyed. We repurpose it with a timeless design so that WOOLBABA can be shared for generations because with regular care - its yours forever.
  • Is sheepskin ethical?
Whilst this is a tricky one to answer as ethics and moral values are so subjective, we can hopefully shed some light on the industry so you can make up your own mind. First of all, it’s important to know that sheep are not farmed specifically for their fleeces, they are farmed for their meat and sheepskin is a by-product of the meat industry. The majority of sheepskin is destroyed, and less than 1% of it is tanned and used. The majority of skins are actually used for the leather industry and only selected fleeces are suitable for producing high quality lambskin. Each fleece is unique in feel and varies in size – not mass produced but a reflection of the natural variation in the sheepskin. Sheepskin is a hugely sustainable product – cared for properly it will last a lifetime and we have many customers who have handed down sheepskin through generations.

  • Sheepskin decreases Asthma risk
Lambskin is naturally hypoallergenic and researchers have also found that the microbes in lambskin can boost the immune system and reduce the chances of developing asthma later in life. A German study found that babies who had slept on lambskin for the first 3 months of their life had 41% less chance of having asthma by the age of 10. SOURCE: European Lung Foundation. "Sleeping on animal fur in infancy found to reduce risk of asthma." ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 8 September 2014. <www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/09/140908083750.htm>. CARE DO'S & DON'TS

Here's the basics:

  • Never machine wash.

  • Spot-clean light spills with a damp sponge and / or paper towels.

  • Shake and hang outside out of direct sunlight for a few hours.

  • Vacuum.

  • Brush.

  • Once a season, at a maximum, pop to specialist dry cleaner.

DO...

  • Shake out your sheepskin to remove dust and dirt particles

  • Gently vacuum sheepskin rugs

  • Brush your sheepskin with a wire brush

  • Bat your sheepskin outside regularly to keep it supple and smooth

  • Spot clean your sheepskin with a cool, damp sponge where possible

  • Use enzyme-free detergent when washing your sheepskin without alkaline ingredients or fabric conditioner. We recommend a specialist sheepskin detergent containing lanolin (super important to replace the natural lanolin in the skin hat you will wash out).

  • Dry your sheepskin leather side-up in a cool, well-ventilated area away from sunlight

DON'T...

  • Leave your sheepskin in the sun for long periods of time – this can cause yellowing!

  • Put your sheepskin on a radiator

  • Brush your sheepskin when wet

  • Wash your sheepskin too often – this strips the lanolin from the fibres, causing the skin to dull over time

  • Machine wash your sheepskin (even on a wool cycle, you risk damaging the biological enzymes in your sheepskin and shrinking it!)

  • Rub or scrub your sheepskin whilst washing, since this can affect the texture

  • Use hairdryers or tumble dryers to dry your sheepskin

  • Use bleach or hot water in the washing process
